The General Contractors Classification and Scope of Work 

This classification covers all building construction activities, including commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential building construction. It includes parking decks, all site work, grading and paving of parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, gutters, storm drainage, retaining walls, hardware, accessory structures, and indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, including natural and artificial surface athletic fields, running tracks, bleachers and seating. The Residential Building Contractors Classification and Scope of Work 

This classification covers all construction activity on the construction of residential units which are required to conform to the residential building code adopted by the Building Code Council according to G.S. 143-138; all site work, driveways, sidewalks, and water and wastewater systems ancillary to the structures mentioned above and improvements; and the work done as part of such residential units under the specialty classifications of S (Insulation), S (Interior Construction), S (Masonry Construction), S (Roofing), S (Swimming Pools), and S (Asbestos).

Applications and Requirements

Licensing information – to apply, contact the State of NC Licensing Board for General Contractors, located at 5400 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27612, or call the North Carolina Licensing Board at (919) 571–4183 or visit https://nclbgc.org.

  • A license is required for projects that cost $40,000.00 or more.
  • There is no minimum experience required, however, applicants must complete an application.
  • A license expires on January 1, following its issuance or renewal and shall become invalid 60 days from that date unless renewed, subject to the approval of the board. License renewal forms are mailed to license holders on or around October 15th of each year for the following year, and licenses may be renewed at any time upon receipt of the renewal form.
  • Each month, members of the Licensing Board review and approve a list of applicants who have fulfilled the NC General Contractors License requirements.
  • All General Contractors licenses expire on January 1 of each calendar year.
  • As a condition of license renewal, at least one qualifier or qualifying party of a licensee coding a building contractor, residential contractor, or unclassified contractor license classification shall complete, on an annual basis, 8 hours of continuing education approved in accordance with this section. The licensee shall complete this requirement for the license to remain valid.
  • Working capital is determined by subtracting current liabilities from current assets.
  • Surety bonds are required for applicants with insufficient working capital.
  • All applicants filing for licensure in the Intermediate or Unlimited limitations must submit the application form, an audited financial statement with an unqualified opinion, a classified balance sheet, and notes to the financial statement prepared by a certified public accountant or an independent accountant who is engaged in the general practice of accountancy. The audited financial statement cannot be older than twelve (12) months from the date of receipt of the application by the Licensing Board.
  • NC Licensing Board for General Contractors has a reciprocity agreement with South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.
